When, in the late 80s, the Vehicle Administration and the Ministry of Interior of Finland decided to upgrade their official documents and issuing system, polycarbonate was anything but a logical choice. However, as security and durability featured high on the list of requirements, the authorities opted in favour of a high-security, advanced polycarbonate solution, feeling confident that critical service issues could be overcome. The evolution of the Finnish passport offers an example of how polycarbonate is able to meet increasingly diverse requirements and challenges. It also shows how the Finns were the first to overcome the technical drawbacks of working with polycarbonate (including problems with bonding). Tommi Nordberg, Senior Vice President Government & Corporate, joined Setec Oy in 1998 as Product Manager. He holds an MSc (Eng) degree from the Helsinki University of Technology, and a degree in International Marketing from the Helsinki School of Economics. He joined Setec Oy from UPM-Kymmene plc, having held several positions in the areas of project management and marketing development. Mika Holmberg is a Project Manager at Setec`s Research & Development Department. His primary responsibility is to develop non-contact ID and travel documents. He holds an MSc (Eng) degree from the Helsinki University of Technology (in material science and electrical engineering). He has worked for Setec Oy since the beginning of 2001. |
