The role of biometrics in ID document issuance( By John W. M. Campbell ) Print
issue 4, 2004

ID Documents include passports, visas, driver`s licenses and many other documents that assert an individual`s entitlement to a particular set of privileges. These privileges can include the right to drive, the right to apply for entry to a country, the right to work, or the right to be considered a citizen of a particular country. The key is that – in all cases – the privileges only accrue to the person to whom the document was originally issued. It is therefore important to verify the authenticity of both the document and the bearer. Traditionally, a simple visual inspection has been used to authenticate both. John Campbell (PhD) is a senior biometrics scientist at 3M. He has developed multiple fingerprint recognition algorithms for different applications, and has designed complete systems that include multiple biometrics. He is currently involved in the development of (i) a number of products that enhance travel and border security, including a family of full-page document readers that authenticate travellers and documents (ii) border management and airline manifest systems that process images and (iii) a personal authenticator that combines biometrics and cryptography.
