It is human to sulk about lost battles and to (prepare to) re-fight last year’s wars. But wars fought and lost will never be re-fought; instead, new threats emerge. Threats that need to be anticipated and addressed. It is much the same with the security of identification documents: although we have introduced a growing number of technical solutions to defeat counterfeiting, we have blissfully ignored a gaping security hole: the trusted insider who can issue a legitimate identification document to an unauthorised person. This article looks into the problems posed by malevolent insiders and puts forward several solutions. |
