issue 4, 2004
some 21 months after the launch of the euro, the ECB has
published all 44 banknote designs that it evaluated prior
to the currency`s introduction. In the end, the ECB
selected a design by Austrian Robert Kalina. Great news
for Mr Kalina, but a disappointment for the remaining 43
designers, who had put a great deal of time and effort
into their designs. While some designers paid the
associated costs out of their own pocket, others worked
on behalf of their respective employers. In addition to
describing the selection procedures, this article
discusses several of the other designs. |
