Designing banknotes is an enormous challenge that demands
creativity and aesthetics on the one hand and experience,
perfection and knowledge of security techniques on the
other. Robert Kalina, designer of the current series of
euro banknotes, offers a brief introduction to the world
of banknote design.
Robert Kalina graduated from the Höheren Graphischen
Bundes- Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Vienna) in 1975. He
subsequently joined OeSB (as it is known today) where he
designed all ATS banknotes issued since 1982. OeSB, the
former state security printer, designs and prints
banknotes on behalf of a number of government
authorities. Robert was mandated by the European Central
Bank to design the current series of EUR banknotes
(1996). He is married and has two children. |
