RFID privacy issues fall into two broad categories: data privacy and location privacy. Security controls that protect data privacy may not address location privacy and vice versa. Travel and identity documents present a special case if they contain RFID. Because the individual to whom the documents are issued does not own the documents, many privacy protection techniques from consumer RFID applications cannot be implemented. As Anna Slomovic and Claire Barrett explain, this places greater responsibility on document issuers to build privacy protections into their RFID use strategies.
